My 97 chevy lumina's driver side power window won't come up. It went down. It is a 4 door and all the other windows work.

Pull off the inner door skin to get at the connector. Check for power with a test light while operating the switch. Make sure you try the master switch at the driver's door and the one at that door. If the light comes on, you need a window regulator. To get the window up for now, hook up the wires to the motor and lift up at the bottom of the window until you get enough sticking out to grab up top. Sometimes you can help push a weak motor up. No prybars! Remember it doesn't take much to shatter glass.

It is possible to have a bad motor.

Another common problem with these is one of the contacts in the switch going bad. The switch will reverse the power & ground of the motor depending on if it's going up or down. If the window went down with normal speed & no weird noises it's possible it's just a bad master switch.

You can pull the switch out of the door panel & jump the up power wire with a fused 12v jumper and flip the switch to the up position (with the key on). If it's just a bad connection on the power up contact in the switch, the window will come up.

Great! I will try this to see if the switch is bad. It did go down like normal, but did not want to come back up. It clicks when I push it down but nothing when I push the button up. If this doesn't work I guess I'll check the motor. Thank you so much. I am just a working mom with not a lot of money to spend on the car. I have plastic on it now and it works, but a window would be better!

Sidom said it but want to refresh what you should be looking for. The window motor will turn one way or the other depending on polarity of each wire. For one direction one wire is positive AND the other must be ground. To reverse you are merely swapping that and motor turns the other way - same motor.

If it tries to move up and needs help the switch is probably fine but can be checked with a test light for alternating pos and neg output to the motor. Sometimes as the car get older and window used long enough the felting fuzz gets worn to plain rubber which is sticky to the glass in the tracks it must stay in and the forces of that can about stop a motor or overwhelm its power. I've had some luck if that's the case with silicone spray but it needs doing regularly if that's it. You'd be shocked at what new rubber channeling costs!

Remember that when checking for ground with a test light you need to empower the alligator clip with 12v from a safe source.

Neat test light is at Wally World now for about $5 that will show red or green for pos and neg and is LED. Know that getting good ground for testing can be iffy with painted parts. The car's body latch to door should work for ground and test it on a fuse for an item that is always empowered to make sure light is behaving.

A cheap test ( old trick of mine - a bit hack but works) is to have ign key in just run position, engine off and watch the dome light. Note it will dim a bit if motor is getting current. Test that with a working window when fully up or down asking it to go up when it is up and down when it is down it still takes the voltage and will flicker dim the dome light. That suggests motor is good and window is sticky. Near all even though balanced somewhat with spring action will be easier to go down than up. Then try that on the problem window. I can only guess but unless misread I think the fuzz on the rubber channel down inside door is worn off but that's only a guess. Good luck. As said - new rubber can be a few hundred bucks - shocking!
