1997
Dodge
Dakota
3.9L
161k km

This is an intermittent problem that just started today. Firstly, the '97 Dakota has switch on headlights (pull switch) and the high beam switch is on the column.

Today for the first time, when I shut off the vehicle the high beam headlights came on. The blue indicator on the dash was made me notice first off. btw, i did not have the lights on because it was daytime.

I could not shut them off after noticing and I tried several times making the high beam switch and also the low beam headlight pull out switch. When I got home, tried the same thing and shut off the engine, no change. I began to think I may have had a fuse or relay related problem, so i had a look at the engine fuse box panel and did not see that there was any related items there. I grabbed my Haines Dakota auto manual and began to read, looking for a possible problem area, but nothing jumped out at me.

And then, they just shut off by themselves. DO I HAVE AN INTERMITTENT problem arising ? Trying to be proactive with this one before I get caught.

appreciate any help

p.s. if there is any further type/text after this, please disregard.

Re: The Dakota only as the Windstar did show up too?

Don't know so relying on you - does the Dakota have a "flash" feature that forces headlights on high beam when directional or the high/low beam switch is pulled on steering column? If so it may have power present without headlights on.

That's a Euro type common road manners thing we don't do so much in the US and since you mentioned kilometers it suggests the vehicle was not originally built for US market - right?

If (only an if) it has/had that feature then this could be a problem with the multifunction switch on the column or a maybe for a relay that would likely be separate for that feature - a guess,
