97 Buick Regal won't shift out of park
|
|
|
This is a 1997 4 door Regal with the 3800 engine and 143,000 miles. Gear selector in the center console. The other day it cut off when turning out of a parking lot. The driver immediately restarted the car. It drove for half a block and cut off again. This time when she put it in Park to re-start the car it would not start AND it could not be shifted out of Park to push the car out of traffic. With lots of ignition key jiggling, banging on the shift lever and inserting another key in the little hole in the console next to the shift selector, we were finally able to start the car and get out of traffic. The car will start but only occasionally. Sometimes when the key is turned to the start position, EVERYTHING goes dead, and even in the Run position nothing, including the power windows works. AND we can not get the shift lever out of park. Battery is new and cables are clean and bright and tight. Even when the car does start, we can not now get the shift out of Park. I thought the little hole close to the shift lever was an emergency release, but inserting keys or screw drivers does nothing. Please ANYBODY, help.

Sounds like you need to take a good look at the ignition switch. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

YUP. Installed a new Borg Warner ignition switch Thursday. Everything worked great until this morning. Then we are right back to all the old symptoms EXCEPT the shift seems to be working normally. I can put the ignition switch in RUN and jumper a wire from the battery to the starter solenoid and the car starts and runs normally. FRUSTRATING, to say the least. What else might be causing this mess?

I certainly hope so, cause I ain't thrilled at the thought of doing the switch again - bad one out of the box. What are the symptoms of a corrupted resistor chip in the key? I measured the resistance of the key to this car and it was over 200K ohms. What is the range of resistances of the GM keys? I thought they have A thru L, and the ranges are 220 ohms and go in 50 ohms increment.

There are 15 different possible pellet values. Here they are You should be seeing a flashing security light if the key is the problem.

As usual, U R THE MAN! The resistance is way out on this key, but I don't remember seeing the security light blinking. I'm getting on it again tonight. And I'm going to check the adjustment and check the BTSI if I can find where it's located.

That is NOT what I wanted to hear, but thanks anyway. At least it eliminates one possible problem. It's almost back to square one. We are down to checking voltage drops and resistances. Thanks for all the suggestions and help so far. I'll keep you posted on the fix.

Just out of curiosity, what are the symptoms of a corrupted chip on a GM key? We are down to a wiring problem and/or an adjustment of the neutral safety switch or the replacement of same. This car has so many intermittent problems that one would think it's a Katrina flood car, but we know it isn't.

The engine won't crank and the won't have fuel pressure during cranking. The security light will also be on or flashing during cranking. Passkey system won't shut the engine down after it is running if it doesn't see the right resistance though. It also won't kill power to the windows. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

The PASS-Key II (R) Theft Deterrent system prevents vehicle theft by disabling the starter motor and fuel system. If the Body Control Module (BCM) does not identify the use of the correct ignition key to start the vehicle, the BCM will communicate a message to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) which will disable the starter relay and fuel delivery to the engine. When the BCM identifies the use of the correct ignition key (resistor pellet) to start the vehicle, the BCM will then send a "fuel enable" and "starter enable" message to the PCM which will allow the vehicle to start. Important: If the wrong ignition key is used in an attempt to start the vehicle, a Data Trouble Code (DTC) will be set and the BCM will not send a "fuel enable" or "starter enable" message to the PCM for 3 minutes even if the correct ignition key is used.

Just my 2 cents & a quick backyard check....Most of those systems I see problems with the wires in the lock cylinder. Especially intermittents. If it's not starting I just disconnect the little 2 wire harness going to the lock cyl, take 2 small wires & tape them to each side of the pellet on the key & insert the small wires into the harness going to the module. If the car cranks, then it's broken wires in the cyl & it would need to be replaced..... Edit.....This requires a 2nd key to turn the lock cyl but any key will do, it doesn't need a pellet in it since the harness is being bypassed with the key that has the pellet in it....

You ALMOST made me break by laptop screen. I have been bringing fresh strawberries in and no matter how hard I try to avoid them GNATS with the berries. They are driving me nuts. The little bug running around in your message looked EXACTLY like the gnats bothering me. They do seem to like the computer screen. I almost smacked it. A bit of relief from the exasperation of the starter/switch problem. I thought I had trapped one of the little buggers under a towel. I was going to torment him.

It worked. Still gets my attention - distracting, to say the least. It might not have been as "interesting" if it weren't for the gnats I keep bringing in with the strawberries. The little buggers are soooooo quick.

I don't know if this is a repeat, but: We got a bad ignition switch - out of the box. All that work only to have to repeat it. The only up side is that I learned more about the wiring on this car. All's well that ends well. Until next time.
