96 rodeo no charge.

help folks, I'm 250 mi. from home with a non-charging 3.2 '96 rodeo. so far I've replaced battery & alternator. now got nothing. last night, while driving, it would charge under 2000 rpm... for a while and intermittently, never enough to keep up. A) could it be some connection I've missed? B) do you think I have run the battery down enough to keep the alternator from functioning??... volt meter was reading a bit under 12v.

I'll try 4 you. Did it charge with the new alt and bat for a while and now not? Alt will charge if the bat has enough umph to try to start the engine but won't from totally dead.
Belt tight? Main wire to alt has bat voltage? If not look for a fuse or fusible link - not sure of the set up with this.
This could be a bad alt if it worked for a while and just quit. Especially so if rebuilt as it may have had some unnoticed, intermittent problem from the last vehicle and they don't always replace all the good stuff in them if it bench checks ok.
Where are you and where did you buy this alternator? Battery is likely ok. If you have a willing donor - jump the two with your vehicle off and let the other charge up yours. See if it holds.

thanks, Tom. battery is walmart & new (got a ride from a state trooper.. what fun). don't know for sure about new alt. (autozone... not my first choice but had 2 take what I could find) before changes it just looked strange. looked normal, it hesitated, I looked down & the voltmeter was at 0. got off the freeway, it picked-up, charging 14v more or less. at 2000 rpm, it would stay positive, if i went over that it would shut down. second stop batt. was down enough that I had to jump it. charged about 16v for a while (maybe 5 min). After that, it was done.. not enough juice to run anything but flashers. DPS trooper pulled over, took me to a Walmart for a battery, installed it and finished the trip. This morning, with the thought that if it's not battery, alternator is next, I swapped that. now I have no charge (constant battery light) right now it's on a charger at the hotel. I'll double for check the fusable link on all data

update: it has a 60A fusable link on the alt.... will check it out

I know you are away from home and possibly the best tools. Keep it fused - I expect that to be blown. The fuseable links can kind of slow blow which would explain it. It may have been from the old bat and alt or if this new bat didn't have a great charge even new the alt works like mad to make it up and things get hot while trying - can even waste a good new alternator.

Regulator will cause similar symptoms with 1 diode shorted. also alternator needs a good battery to deliver battery voltage when new. until residual magnetism takes place.
