My mom's olds intrigue stopped running. her 8mo old battery was leaking so it was replaced. everything lights up but it still won't start. the battery bolt and cable are somewhat corroded. a mechanic told her she needs a starter. how can i get it started to drive it to the shop? engine is a 3800. thanx

If that bolt and cable are so bad that may be the only problem. Telltale would be if the lights go out when you try to start the car. That cable can be replaced entirely or just a high quality end splice not the temporary one you may see for a couple bucks - the good one will have a plastic/rubber box that goes over the splice. Battery cables must be good at all ends and to the starter before I would blame the starter. It might need one but I think it's too soon to conclude that. Are you apt to do some of this yourself? T

TRICK! Try jostling the large + wire that starts at the battery, may to to a spot to jump the car on the way, and goes on to the starter. It should be red and about the size of a pencil and you may see where it ends up at the starter. Bet the area looks like crap. Just twist and jostle it there and try to start the car again. If you feel safe and out of moving parts way tug a bit on it while a helper starts the car. DON'T TRY THAT IF YOU ARE UNSURE ABOUT MOVING PARTS. Bet it will start one more time and get it to where you want the thing. If that works then those connections are the problem now and have them all cleaned up an rust/corrosion proofed. I still don't think it the starter but you'll get one if you ask and while they are there they'll clean up the wires. Starter can be a pill to get at and some require some antics to get out and back in. Understood if you don't want to do it. TRICK II: If you have a clear shot try tapping on the larger body part of the starter with a hammer. Don't go crazy with that trick and watch out where the hammer swings. Try again it may start. That would just about warrant a new starter if that works. If you have towing coverage and aren't going to do this work then just let it go. I just think you don't need the starter and can save on that but still get all the connections cleaned up properly. Good luck, T

Hello csams. Are you sure about the year of the car? My repair resources do not show a 96 Intrigue. A starter is a very doable DIY project. Confirm year and we can post information to help you out. Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds

I got my mom's car started by toggling on the battery cable and tapping lightly at the post where the corrosion was. She drove it to a trusty mechanic we've known for years and he confirmed the starter was ok. Thanx 2 U we saved some bucks! By the way I stand corrected. It's a '98 intrigue.

I just knew it wasn't the starter! Of course it was way2old who knew there is no 96 of that car. It's not just about saving bucks but getting the right thing fixed. It's my opinion that a good original in many cases may have more good life left in it than a reworked/rebuilt part. This is common with the connections all over the place. I live for older cars and pounce when folks give up just because of age and miles and have the finest cars for short $$ and some time. To prevent these type problems I use a flux brush and pure silicone grease and cover all these and other things around the car and almost never have an issue with them again - and I mean DECADES!! Glad we could help and thanks for letting us know, T
