The starter had been giving me difficulty and hitting it with a wrench was becoming regular so i thought it finally bit the dust. i removed the old one and when i put the new one in I noticed that the wiring hookups are very strange. there are 2 red cables and one black. only the large red battery feed and the black wire fit appropriately on the large stud + connection leaving the smaller red line to attatch to the small - terminal. because this is the only way the eyeholes on the wire connection fit i would have to assume this was how it was hooked up before. I should have paid better attention when removing the old one but it seemed staright forward. so now i have the wires assumedly where they were before and yet i still have the exact problem. battery has power but when key is turned nothing happens except the stereo and power options come on. Could this be a short somewhere? or perhaps ignition cylinder?, is the wiring setup totally wrong? very confused any help appreciated Sidom Veteran / Moderator Dec 6, 2009, 5:15 PM Post #2 of 3 (5718 views) Re: 96 cavalier 2.2L starter and wiring Sign In It sounds like you have the wiring correct, it's hard to mess it up. The small wire is the trigger wire for the starter & should only have power when the key is turned to the start position. Get a test light & helper and see if that wire has power when the key is turned to the start position. If not then you are going to have to get a wiring diagram and trace it down. If your security light is flashing then that would need to be addressed 1st or if you have an aftermarket alarm system, I would 1st bypass the alarm. You could double check the starter by momentarily jumping 12v to the small terminal but you have to be careful because as soon as you do that the starter will start to crank over. steve01832 Veteran Dec 6, 2009, 5:54 PM Post #3 of 3 (5716 views) Re: 96 cavalier 2.2L starter and wiring Sign In Ashley, I have posted the wiring diagram for your vehicle. You will need a 12volt testlight connected to ground. Touch the probel to the purple wire as an assistant turns the key to the crank position. If the test light lights, connect the clip to Battery positive and touch the probe to the starter motor body. If the test light glows bright, Replace starter motor. If the test light doesn't light, have assistant shift to neutral and repeat test. If test light now lights, replace open neutral safety switch. Post back if we need to go further.
