Over the cold winter I did not notice but now I do and sometimes I get a smell of hot coolant for a few secs. The temp gauge goes up to a little over half way now. speed User May 17, 2011, 8:12 PM Post #2 of 3 (1959 views) Re: 96 Taurus cooling fans Sign In imo id bet you have a bad relay, i know they are completely differnt cars, but my 96 camaro had the same issue except neither of them would turn on, i found that one relay ran both fans at low speed, then each fan had its own seperate relay for a higher speed. if this is the case the fan thats not running probably has a bad high-speed realy. It uses 2 relays for low speed and 3 for high speed.
