96 Taurus cooling fans Sign In

I have a 96 ford taurus 3.0l and only one of the cooling fans is coming on, I am assuming that this is not right and would like to know is there something I should do before going out and buying a replacement fan. Over the cold winter I did not notice but now I do and sometimes I get a smell of hot coolant for a few secs. The temp gauge goes up to a little over half way now.

imo id bet you have a bad relay, i know they are completely differnt cars, but my 96 camaro had the same issue except neither of them would turn on, i found that one relay ran both fans at low speed, then each fan had its own seperate relay for a higher speed. if this is the case the fan thats not running probably has a bad high-speed realy.

No, that's not the way the Camaro is wired. It uses 2 relays for low speed and 3 for high speed.
The Taurus fans are wired together and both should be running, probably a bad motor. test it manually.
