96 Nissan wont start

I have a 1996 Nissan Altima that wont start. When I turn the ignition al power goes on, chimes and headlights work but there is no sound from the starter, and the headlights don't dim. I can't get to the starter to jump the solenoid. All suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you cannot jump it at the starter......
Sounds like you have a faulty starter to me.

I know that we’ve all done what Jim has advised you to try.
try giving the starter a couple of whacks with a hammer
And I still do, when I know that I have a bad starter and I’m trying to get one last start out of it; while out on a service call.
But there’s a good chance that if the starter isn’t the problem and you hit it with a hammer; you’ve just made it one.
Most of today’s starters use permanent magnet pole shoes, rather then electromagnetic, steel shoes.
Permanent magnets have a tendency to crack, if they are hit or dropped while being installed.
Believe me, I can have butter finger at times and I dropped one while installing it. The thing barely had enough power to turn itself, let alone an engine.
Sorry Jim I don’t mean to contradict you; but I hated buying a second starter for that customer’s vehicle; man the old starters, you could drop kick them across the shop and they’d still work with out a problem.
But hey, if I ever needed a starter whacked; you is daa hit man I’ll call. LOL

As you can see,I edited that portion out of my answer...
I will have to choose my words more carefully next time...
I re-read that and i know what i meant but I guess some would not and by saying give it a couple whacks with a hammer paints the picture to someone to go and grab a sledgehammer or a large maul and commence to beating the S**t out of your starter in hopes of bringing it back to life .If any thing ,I should have said a light tap or two...
That was certainly bad advice on my part and I stand corrected.I do not recommend doing this .
Never ever do this ...
Thankfully ,i have been lucky as to never have damaged a starter this way and even luckier that i have never dropped one..
I have worked with a couple guys who did drop starters.
As Dan stated,the old ones could take a beating.
This one country gent i worked with had a starter fall on the head .The starter was broken but he was no worse for wear...
I guess those Canuck boys dont know their own strength...LOL
So if you need a starter "whacked"..just call old alley mechanic Jim out to help ya...

Again sorry Jim and I'm glad I didn't piss you off to much with my post. LOL
I know you didn't mean beat the Sh!t out of the starter but you know people if a tap doesn't do it maybe a good old whack will. LOL
