'96 GMC Jimmy died while driving / will not start Sign In

1996 GMC Jimmy 4.3L, auto, 2 WD, 186k miles. Died while my wife was driving it, fuel pump had been sounding bad, so I replaced the fuel pump and fuel filter without trouble shooting, big mistake and waste of money. Not the problem. Excellent fuel pressure at intake. Next replaced crank position sensor, ignition coil, coil driver module, cap, rotor, and distributor (high voltage switch) with cam position sensor. Engine turns over, does not start. Have sprayed starter fluid in intake, no luck. Ohmed across all fuse in the dash, all are good. Verified 12 volt dc at ignition coil and coil driver module. Verified 12 volt dc through fusible link from battery. Disconnected battery leads and cleaned them. Connected tester from auto zone, no faults found. Please help me identify the problem. Disconnected a plug wire and connected it to a spark tester, didn't have spark.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head; you’ve spent a lot of time & money the way it sounds and its time to take the truck in and have it diagnosed.
Not your fault it’s just that you’ve done all the “regular” stuff and you still don’t have spark? This may take someone with the proper equipment and experience too trace down the root problem. Like I said I’m not knocking your abilities; it’s the technology that has you beat and forcing your hand. There are so many could be’s that if wrong you’ll be throwing more good money to bad. For example the truck may have gone into long-term tamper mode in the anti theft system? If for whatever reason this is what’s happen; lets say a bad connection at the instrument cluster. You turn the ignition to the start position, that sends a coded signal to the cluster, if the cluster recognises the signal it sends a signal to the BCM (body control module). The BCM looks at this signal and says ok they know each other and then sends an all clear signal to the PCM (powertrain control module); which in turn allows the engine too start & run. If this signal isn’t received by the cluster or sent to the BCM, the truck isn’t going to start; nothing wrong under the hood. This is just an example, if this were the case the anti theft light should be on; again if the system(s) are functioning properly.

Dan, I've also been thinking about taking it in, actually been thinking about that all night long. Either have a bad VCM, ignition switch, open wire, poor conducting ground, or something else? Hopefully a dealership will have the proper test equipment to diagnose the problem without having to resort to diagrams and meter.

Does anybody have anything in mind that I should check before having it towed to the dealer?

Have you checked whether the distributor is actually turning? I’ve seen a number of distributor drive gears become so worn that they will no longer be engaged with the camshaft gear?
Just a thought.

It turns as the engine is cranked, I checked it yesterday evening.

Re: '96 GMC Jimmy died while driving / will not start Sign In

My chiltons manual doesn't show a ignition or engine relay. Rotor does turn while engine is turning over. No spark coming out of coil either. Wouldn't be the first time I had seen a new part not function properly, not something I want to consider. Just makes the blood boil thinking about such things. Rain has set in for the week and my wife doesn't like finding a way to and from work so the Jimmy is being towed to the dealership tomorrow morning. Thanks for all the advise.

Jimmy was towed to dealer this morning. They called this evening, it was the VCM, PCM, ECU, whatever you want to call the black box on the passenger fender well is the part that is bad. The ignition should be good for a while longer with all the new parts.
