96 Escort Fuel Pump power/relay issues Sign In

I have a 96 Escort that is not getting power to the fuel pump.

Here's what I have done so far. Fuel pump has been replaced as well as the relay under the dash. When I connect the pump directly to a 12v power source it runs, so the pump is not the issue. Fuel cutoff switch is not tripped.

The new relay is not clicking when the key is set to "on" or when the car is cranking. Power is coming into the relay at just over 9v on both of the black/pink wires. There is no power to the fuel cutoff switch.

I have replaced the relay once and there is still no power to the fuel cutoff switch with the new relay. The problem lies between the relay and pump as power is getting to the relay. Is there something that would cause the relay not to work? Maybe a bad ground from the relay? What would be my next steps here? Can I bypass the relay to make sure the wires are good between the relay and fuel cutoff switch? If so what pins do I jump?

Thanks in advance.

The Blk/Pk wires are the output from the fuel pump relay and they should be 12v. Check the incoming feed on the GRN/BLK wire that comes from the 20a fuel pump fuse. If the incoming power is 12v, then I would replace the relay.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Black and green wire is getting 12v but I have already replaced that relay? Would it be anything else or could I have gotten a bad relay from the parts store?

You have 12v coming into the relay by when the relay energizes and it connects to the output, it's only 9v coming out. Unless there is a short/load pulling that voltage down, it's losing iut at the relay.

Re: 96 Escort Fuel Pump power/relay issues Sign In

I'm not strong on the electrical side of things so sorry if my responses seem elementary.

So I have 12v (11.86 actually) coming into the relay. At the fuel cutoff connector (black and pink) I have just over 9v. I checked it at the fuel pump as well and when the engine is cranking I have 6v.

Replace the relay again or do I look for a short somewhere between the relay and the fuel cutoff switch?

You can try jumping out the relay socket at the GRN/BLK and Blk/ PK and see what you you have at the pump then. If the voltage comes up, you have an issue at the relay.

Re: 96 Escort Fuel Pump power/relay issues Sign In

Jumped those and with the key off got 11.86v, key on gave me 10.9v and cranking gave me 10.15v.

Replaced the new relay and got 9.8v with the key on and cranking gave me just over 6 volts.

I'm assuming the relay I got from the parts store is no good correct?

I just went down and answered my own question. I jumped the relay again and just connected the pump back up and it ran. Is there a ground that is maybe bad that the relay connects to or is it for sure the relay?

I don't understand what you are asking.

It seems as the relay is grounded in the ECM. Could the ECM be bad, causing the relay not to ground properly thus causing my low voltage issue?

Re: 96 Escort Fuel Pump power/relay issues Sign In

You said you had voltage at the Inertia switch. The only way it can get anything on the output of the relay is by the relay energizing. The fact that less is coming out of the relay than going in, points to a bad relay.

That makes sense. I'll replace the relay and get back to you with the results. Thanks so much Hammer Time for your help!

Replaced it with Another new relay and still having the same issue. With the relay installed, the pump is not firing up and only getting 9v to the pump. The relay also connects to the PCM. Could that be bad?

There has to be a problem with the way you are testing because things aren't adding up.
