96 Bonneville voltage drop to 4 volts when key in run position Sign In

Drove car into yard and later went to start and everything went dead, back to acc. and power came back. I know it is in the ignition circuit because when I pull the 60 amp fuse for ignition switch there is no problem. Pulled each fuse on both fuse panels inside of car and relays. Replaced ignition switch and that didn't help. The battery is good because I did a losd test on it. Even pulled wires off starter and that made no difference. My next move is to remove dash and hand over hand each wire. What am I missing?

I find that's usually a bad battery cable connection as the draw of starter exceeds all else combined in the car. It needs to be known that cables are good (GM batter ends at battery are a trouble spot) and the other ends too - including the ground to engine block,

I will check the connections, I still have the big draw even with the starter cable out of the circuit.

You haven't really concluded anything by pulling the 60 amp fuse. That fuse feeds many other fuses and you have to find the smaller branch that is causing the draw.

There is a procedure for finding a battery draw like that.

You will need a digital ammeter and a jumper wire with clips on the ends to do this.
First rig any door switches so you can have a door open without triggering the interior lights and unplug the hood light. Remove one battery cable and attach the meter in series between the battery cable and battery post. Take the jumper wire and also attach it the same way. Leave the jumper wire on for at least 10 minutes to expire all the automatic timers. Now remove the jumper wire and read the meter. Anything over 50ma is too much draw. The way you locate this is to start removing fuses one at a time until the meter drops to normal level. This will be the circuit with something staying on. Determine what components are part of that circuit and check them individually until the problem is isolated.

If I put the fuse back in and turn the key to run the battery starts to gas off. Should I put the fuse back in?

I don't know what you mean by "gassing off".
Your battery is disconnected during this test.

It has a sulfur smell. And the neg terminal gets hot.

Not a good thing! It can be explosive so if battery can gas and smell all by itself not connected it's shorted inside and junk. Stay away - let it finish well ventilated if that's what it's doing!

If the terminal is getting hot, that means there is high resistence there which means a loose connection. Remove that cable and completely wire brush it.
