95 Nissan Altima tachometer problem	Sign In

My 1995 Altima tach is going haywire back and forth all the time. This just started this past summer. Now my remote car starter will not work correctly. I believe they are connected somehow. The car starts but quits after about 3-5 seconds. It cycles thru its 3 starts like its supposed to but shuts down each time. Is there some kind of sensor bad or possible bad wire? A local repairman tried to troubleshoot it for me but could not fix and the nearest Nissan dealer is over an hour away.

Wiring to these aftermarket things is a nightmare. All connections need to be properly soldered and sealed. Either that or take the thing out - and still solder up wiring and seal them. These and alarms cause more trouble with some time on them than they are worth. My opinion, - T

Thanks for the reply Tom. The remote has worked flawlessly for 7 years until now. What I don't understand is that it still starts the car but something is shutting it down instantly.

Maybe because those systems are told to shut off if they detect a failure. It now could be faulty an render you a pedestrian! I can't be sure of that - just a good guess. As said - check connections, - T

Did you ever resolve your tachometer problems. My 1995 Altima is doing the same thing ... most of the time it registers 0 rpm, but sometimes goes erratic. Once, in the rain, it actually read the correct rpm.

Hi-No I did not fix the tach problem but I did fix the remote starter problem. A wire had pulled off a cluster of wires from the distributor and it works now since I reattached to the cluster. I've asked numerous people including the Nissan service tech and he says he'd have to troubleshoot it but I don't feel like driving the 50 miles to do it. It's supposedly not doing any harm to my car but it just drives me nuts seeing it go crazy. She's 10 years old so I'm not upset about it. If I can get another year or two out of it I'll be happy. It's still very comfortable to ride in.
