95 Chevy Lumina fans wont kick in Sign In

I am having some issues with my 95 lumina which I have recently purchased with a bad trans for 350 dollars. I have replaced the transmission with a used one and I noticed that the heater core was bypassed so I went ahead and bought some hoses from lowes and my heater core works fine without any leaks. car runs great now but I noticed something different. Odometer reads 192k but the 3100 motor itself or the heads look to be from a newer lumina, im guessing from 97 thru 2001 because of the fact that it has the temperature sensor with the three wires coming out of it. green for temp gauge, and yellow and black. If I'm not mistaken I believe the 95 lumina came with a two wire temperature sender for the fans and a seprate sensor in the rear head for the temp gauge. my problem is, this motor does not have the sensor in the rear head so im forced to stay with the 3 wire temperature sensor located on the upper intake manifold. I know my relays are good because I tested them in another lumina. and my fans will only come on when I run the AC. When I turn off the ac the temperature goes all the way past 3/4 mark and the fans never kick in. I have three luminas and I am familiar when exactly the fans should come on and thats around the 1/2 mark. So my guess would be that the computer in the car is not programmed to recognize the newer 3 wire temp sensor and that might be why the fans never kick in automatically. I could be wrong. Any help would be great. I'm thinking of resorting to rigging the fans to run full time. Meanwhile the AC must be on for the car to run cool.

Running it full time would be one options....... Engine swaps from different years can be a PITA.

I would be curious to what the connecter looked like. On the newer single the extra wire is just for the gauge and they share the same ground. It's possible someone identified the terminals and just ran the 2 terminals together. If they did it right it should work.....

What kind of connecter is on there and where are the wires spliced?

I would probably want to look at a datastream and see what the ECT pid is reading. While you are correct the comp uses this to turn the fans on and it's around the 225° area I would be more concerned with the rest of the systems at this point and not just the fans. The ECT is a primary input and can effect a lot of stuff if the reading isn't right. If you say the engine is running fine with no other problems the ECT would almost have to be right and your problem is some where else. Either that or skewed just enough where it's not getting to 225° but close, even then with a skewed ECT sensor you are going to be having some fuel control issues due to the reading being to cool.....

So....in a nutshell.......You need to look at a datastreem & see what the ECT is reading when the engine is warmed up.........

This is what a normal temperature sensor for a 95 lumina should look like. I got this one from a junk yard.

This is an extra set of heads i have in my garage and is from a 95 lumina. see how the rear head has the extra sensor for the temp gauge.

This is what it looks like right now. The green wire is what controls my temp gauge.

A purple wire was used to extend the green wire. looks like its coming through the firewall.

When u say datastream do u mean the data from an obd scanner?

Damn, I could've sworn I replied to this......

Yes, you really need to hook up a scanner and see what the temp reading is.

With that set up, I would be tempted to get the 3 wire connecter and wire one input to the PCM and the other one to the gauge and see if the readings jive with what the real temp is in the engine.......Once the PCM sees 225° or higher, it should ground the fan relay & kick on the fans.....

That was decent of you to jump into another thread & offer help.....
