94 tempo charging prob Sign In

i have a 94 ford tempo with a 2.3l milage is 150k +
i have been hearing a squeak that seems to be coming from
the ac comp.
last week while on my way to work with the headlights on
the lights went dim the radio went off and the heater blower went off.
i made it to 2 work but the batt was dead.
i replaced the alrernator and while driving home the car stalled and wouldnt restart.
i jumped it and removed the positive wire from batt and drove to a
local autozone and had the batt and alt checked. both checked good.
so i charged the batt and drove to work the following day only to have
the same problem. i removed the alt and had it rechecked still good.
with a digital meter i get a read of about 13v with nothing on.
when the lights or cooling fan are on the voltage drops to below 12 right
around 11.5 or lower and will not go up until everything is turned off.
then it goes to around 12.06.
i have checked the grounds at the front of the car and while checking the
motor ground i broke the wire and will replace today.
is there anything else i should look at or try.
thx for any help

Make sure the serpentine belt tensioner is functioning properly and not allowing the belt to slip.

dumass: To add - make sure belt is exactly on properly and running true. If you wait - even in Winter (unless extraordinarily cold) A/C compressor will cycle on for a short time with defrost or a mix request and may have chewed up old belt. I also recall the clutch on some of the (A/C clutch) could wobble as a couple I witnesses moved off alignment as they made some that were rubber isolated that failed.

If so it will fail again. Memory is tricky - I think a belt for a non A/C Tempo will work if you don't want to fix A/C if that was involved at all.

Also, some Ford products of the vintage used either 6 or 7 groove belts! All must match if a component was recently replaced or belt won't last for diddle.

Appreciate you coming back and hope it's all set now but watch it for a while too,

T
