94 chevy brake lights Sign In

i have a 94 chevy p/u 175,xxx miles and 5.7 motor. i replaced the motor and now the brake lights don't work. they work when the truck is off but when the key is on or the truck is running they don't work the crash light works no matter if the truck is on or not. can anyone help?

What's a crash light? Do you mean the 3rd (high mount) brake light?

yes thats what i mean. sorry i have always called it a crash light

You most likely have a bad Combination switch in the steering column.

i have already replaced it. i have tested it too and the switch works fine.

Apparently not. The signal for the 2 lower lights passes through that switch and then directly to the lights so if you have working turn signals the circuit is complete.

the turn signals work and the four ways work so i have no idea whats wrong.

You're going to have to verify the brake light signal going into the combo switch (white wire) and coming back out.

You test for power when the brake is applied using a test light or digital voltmeter. If you don't know how to test for power, how are you telling me you tested the combo switch and it's fine?
