The "check engine" light stays on. All the fluids are O.K. It has a 5.8 engine and is four wheel drive with an automatic transmission. Once in a while when driving it will go off for just a few seconds then come back on. Is this something that can be fixed at home (diy) or is it a dealer fix? Thank you for any help/advice given. It is a 1994 F150 extended cab with 241,000 miles. W.R.

Re: 94 Ford F150 "check engine" light stays on Sign In

The "check engine" light is an indicator for a system that monitors many electronic functions in the system, also called the "malfunction indicator lamp" (MIL). It can come on for any of hundreds of different causes from any of the systems that the computer monitors. Some are very important and can lead to further component or engine damage and some are emissions related not as serious but still a problem and need to be repaired.

Your first step is to have the computer scanned to retrieve the trouble codes that were set when the check engine light came on. Those codes will give you specific information about what the computer saw and will get you pointed in the right direction to find your problem.

Thank you very much for your reply to my question about the check engine light. I don't know for sure but I think I remember someone telling me that Auto zone or Advance auto will check that out for you. I am going to call them tomorrow and find out. Thanks again.W.R. Sly

yes autozne will read your codes for free if you take oyur car in just go to counter and ask for your check engine light codes to be read, they can also give you printouts of the codes so you dont forget, get the printouts or make sure your remember the codes numbers if you plan on asking about the codes as we will need them to help diagnose the problem right. have a good evening.

I don't believe autozone does code reading on OBD-1 vehicles for free.
He might have to take it to a shop that Has a OBD-1 code reader.

OBD I is an earlier form of On Board Diagnostics. In approximately 1995, the manufacturers went to OBD II system. With the OBD I system, you can retrieve your own trouble codes with a little reading and patience. The link below describes how to do that. Good luck.

Hi: I have not looked at wiring because I did not know what wires might and might not cause those kind of problems. As of last night my wife has some medical conditions that need to be adddressed and then my outside lawn/garden activities are upon me so it will be a few days before I can get back to checking out my truck's problems. Thank you for your response. W.R.

W.R - as Mr. Scotty said, some or most Autozons and others are not doing code readings (free many times) for the older OBDI systems but as shown you can get codes out of them. Check places like Wallyworld as there's one (I own one) for Fords for about $25 bucks but you are really getting a book and the tool just blinks and you have count - book says how. No, those don't give printouts or hook to your computer. Do take codes as the area to go looking for a problem not gospel that it knows exactly the problem - you might find a bad wire or connection to a good item?
