94 Bronco turn on head lights and the Truck stalls Sign In

Hi, can anyone help?
I have a 1994 Ford Bronco 302 V8 302,000.00 miles (origonal) runs good but all of a sudden today while its running i turn on the head lights and it kills the engine. The alternator is putting out the correct voltage I can have all the electrical items in operation at the same time with no problem but turn on the head lights and the engine just dies. Any ideas out there???? Oh if i turn off the lights it fires right up, Thanks ahead of time, any help on this one would be GReatly appriciated.

craig; You stated that the alternator is putting out correct voltage. What voltage? and what amperage output?
The voltage should be in the 13.6-14.6V range. Not sure of the amp rating of your alternator, but 60A should be bare minimum, probably higher. I've never heard of a headlamp switch shorting to ground, but I suppose anything is possible.Unsure

Re: 94 Bronco turn on head lights and the Truck stalls Sign In

Ok i have done some more work and trouble shooting, heres what happened.

The altenator is fine 14.5v 85amp i found out when the truck is running the right front head light glows very dim with the switch off and the right turn indicator on the dash glows dim also. This gets even better if i unplug the right head lamp the truck won't start if i plug it back in it starts. If i turn on the egnition key and don't start the engine the lights don't come on, start the engine the lights glow.
I had the dash apart all the way to check wiring harness for obvious shorts and all looks good. If i isolate the main head light switch by un plugging it and start the engine the lights still glow and if i unplug the multi switch (turn ind switch) start the engine the lights still glow. The right head light when i turn on the lights is not as bright as it should be and when i turn on the high beams it gets dimmer. This is with the engine off because if i turn on the headlighs with the engine running it kills the engine. I am not blowing any fuses??? could this be a short in a switch like the ignition switch? my ignition switch is getting pretty worn 302,000.0 miles but still works

Any ideas where to look next would be great.

Thanks for any help/guidance

craig; This is a strange one, I must admit. It really smacks of a bad ground, somewhere. The 'worn ignition switch'...the ignition/key tumbler is just a mechanical item. The actual ignition switch (an electrical part) is mounted lower on the column. I have never had one create symptoms like this, but this isn't a perfect world.Unsure
We've got some guys here that are sharp with electrical issues...hopefully, one will see this and jump in to give some more ideas?

Agreed - this is a bad ground as Loren suggested. They are all over the vehicle to groung the engine block to the body and either get broken or look good and don't work. Sometimes plain adding them is the easiest solution.

They look like this - uninsulated suckers.........

just buy what you need as I think because you said headlights dimmed that the puter is not getting proper voltage either and causing the issues. Add these or chase down OE ones and clean them. There can be many in the car, block to chassis metal, dash to know chassis metal, even exhaust and trans to body and or from thru the vehicle,

Adding caused no harm is placed out of harm's way to do that,

I dont know Fords all that well but this reminds me of the problem older Chevy Vans had at the bulkhead connector where the wiring melts/burns .It allows the vehicle to start but when the headlamps are turned on the vehicles would stall.
Usually any added draw like stepping on the brakes, turning on the blower, radio etc would overheat the burnt terminal and cause the vehicle to stall.

Just a thought...
