93 caravan charge drops Sign In

I have a 93 Grand Carvan se 3.3ltr

I have tested the alt and comes back good, battery is good also.
This is whats happening yesterday the van chk eng lite come on and i noticed the alt meter dropping so pull over time. I shut it off looked around make sure everything is tight yip, so i started it back up and amp meter is back at 14 v like nothing happened. After a few miles it did it again. Pull the alt ( which btw the designer should be shot ) tested and comes back good put it back in and back to 14 v on the meter.

Any ideas

Re: 93 caravan charge drops Sign In

Have you had it scanned for trouble codes to see why the check engine light is on?
That would be my first step.

DISPLAYING CODES Trouble codes stored in PCM memory can be displayed in two ways;

1. Cycling the ignition key On - Off - On - Off - On, and observing the Check Engine light.
2. Through a scan tool connected to the vehicle data link connector.

Re: 93 caravan charge drops Sign In

The trouble codes are going to be 2 digits. The 55 code means end of codes.

Reread the other two again.

ok code 12 and 41
now this seemed to start after a new radio was installed but i am not sure how that would affect charging.

Re: 93 caravan charge drops Sign In

Code 41 is generator(alternator) field circuit
An open or shorted condition detected in the generator field control circuit.

Don't see a code 12 in the list.

Sorry code 12 means the PCM saw a power interuption. That code usually sets if you had disconnected the battery at one time.

Re: 93 caravan charge drops Sign In

That's the problem. Bench testing doesn't test the rest of the circuit. The voltage regulator is in the PCM on that truck.

Just to let you know, they do make retrofit kits to install an external voltage regulator to eliminate the PCM from the circuit.

Here's one, there are many. Just Google "Chrysler voltage regulator conversion"

I have switched out the alt and the pcm. No change in the charging issue.
I did a continuity test off all 4 leads on the alt and i get good tone. the only place i havent tested was the actual 60 pin connector on the pcm. Dose any one have a diagram for this so i can finish the test. And if they do test good also what else could it be .

as far as i can tell everything is the way it should be.

Re: 93 caravan charge drops Sign In

Try this. Hook your volt meter up to the battery. Back probe PIN 20 DK Green wire with a small paper clip or equivalent at the PCM connector. Start the engine and watch your volt meter reading. Ground the back probe with a piece of jumper wire to the battery negative terminal. The volt meter should show 14-15 volts and you should hear the alternator whine. Just ground the probe long enough to see if the alternator kicks in. What this does is full field the alternator, so you can tell if the alternator and circuit to the alternator is good.

Re: 93 caravan charge drops Sign In

I found the problem on a hunch I contacted the old owner and asked if they had done anything weird. He said they had to move a ground off the engine to the firewall. When i checked it was rusted and loose moved it back to where its supposed to and boom , the charge is back.

Re: 93 caravan charge drops Sign In

That's interesting. Why did they move that ground off the engine to the firewall? That to me would mean the alternator is finding ground though the body of the vehicle instead of through the negative battery cable which is grounded to the engine block.

Re: 93 caravan charge drops Sign In

Good point DS! Seems this block is getting ground back fed thru body metal which will no doubt cause more troubles.

Been ages (seems everything was ages ago Mad) but have seen a clutch cable become the ground for a car and burn it to death but engine would start with just that much for ground! OMG - I actually remember it, a 1974 Mustang II (glorified Pinto) - car nor I was all that old at the time!
