'93 Ford Escort / battery questions Sign In

As tempted as I was to ask Tom about this on the other thread, I was feeling guilty about being off topic so I started a new thread :-)

A week or so ago the escort had to be jump started. Since that time I have had to put it on a charger almost daily. Today the charger isn't charging it enough to start it and the battery actually felt hot - which scared me! I took the charger off and started looking for a new battery.

What causes the battery to heat up? Is the battery for sure bad or could it be a bad connection? (I ask this because the negative terminal is 'hokie' and needs to be replaced) Also, I've been researching and read on Wikipedia that the powdery corrosion around the negative terminal is acid coming from within the battery. Is this true???

what to do, what to do......

Correction!! Its not the 'terminal' that's hokie..... its the clamp.

Sorry about that! I just read my post and realized my mistake!

Battery condtion and the teminals are critical. When you tried to charge it it probably didn't make a good connection to the battery itself. The junk is part acid from the battery and electrical parts are pretty cheap there and dis-similar metals don't like to get along.

You need to charge and test battery off car. They can short inside, get hot and even smell like sulfurish like odor. Worse - they can explode! They make hydrogen which we know didn't work out so well in the Hindenburg!

With known good battery and connections you can then test that the charging system is up to par.

Batteries and alternators work hand in hand and one can take out the other. Both need to be good at the same time,

The battery is bad, I dunno if I did it by overcharging or if its time was just up, but I managed to buy a brand new one today and will put it in the car first thing in the morning. I'll then test the alternator... is there anything else I should check as well?

Charge the new battery first. Some are only partially charged brand new!

If connections are cleaned up then it should start and with a voltmeter should show 13+v to near 15v while just running. If not then charging system needs to be checked out,
