92 achieva wont start	Sign In

just bought a 92 achieva on the way home the alt died on me, so i put a new one in now it wont start, borrowed the neighbors jump box, no dome lights no power.
1992 Achieva 2.3 4 cyl

i will appreaciate any help

An alternator needs a decently charged battery to work. Sounds stupid but that's the way it is. When you can see about 14V it's working and let it idle - drive it or best is to charge the battery separately from the alternator. Warning: If you make even a new alternator work too hard it can fail! T

Now you need to know that the alternator is working. If you don't have a voltmeter a cheap trick is to monitor the speed of the directionals. Another is to feel warmth on the alternator after it's been running a while with some things on in the car for a while. Safer to shut engine off if you do this but the directionals should be enough. Good luck with it. T

the alternator is working, and we drove it yesterday, but this morning i went to the grocery store and when i went to leave the car would not start, when i turn the key i loose all power, if i turn the key back to the accessory position every thing works.
but when i turn the key to the run position the clock stays on for a second thenall power goes off dome lights and everything i think it might be the switch.
