Ok. I'm and old fuss with this stuff. An alternator needs a good battery and some charge to work. You can kill them both in no time if not done right. T

I INSTALLED A NEW BATTERY AND CHARGED IT ,,,, THE CAR STARTS FINE FROM THE SILINOID ON THE FIREWALL AND THE ALT LITE IS STILL ON ,,, I AM THINKING THAT THE OLD ALT SHORTED SOMETHING OUT FROM BEING SO DESTROYED I COULD MOVE THE PULLY 1/2 A INCH UP AND DOWN,, I ALSO REPLACED THE SILINIOD TO BE ON THE SAFE SIDE ,,, STILL NO CHARGE... AND WILL NOT START FROM THE KEY,,, PLEASE REPLY .....

If you had that much freeplay in the alternator I'm shocked that it didn't blow up and destroy other stuff. You should see about 14V when running if not it's probabably a bad alternator new or not! That's my best guess at this. Let us know how you make out. T

Is this a Mercury Marquis??? If so you’ve likely blown a fusible link which protects or feed a portion of the fuse panel and other devices. You’ll find these fuse links at the starter relay; the smaller wires that are bolted to the battery cable side of the relay. I’ve seen these smaller wires (fusible links) burn open electrically and not even burn the wires insulation so visually they look fine. Here’s a quick way of checking and that is to hook your finger around each one of theses 14 gauge wires and give them a fairly hard pull, if they come apart they’re no good. Dan. Canadian "EH"

Dan - I guessing this is a Grand Marquis. I think that was the first year for the 4.6 engine. I keep forgetting about fusable link stuff as the only car I had a heck of heck of a time with wasn't a Ford product. To owner, you should only use the correct gauge wire if you find what Dan said. The freeplay you mentioned certainly could have shorted out the old alternator. They may sell the fusable link wire by the foot but as I recall it wasn't that costly for a packaged roll of it. T
