92 Dodge Dynasty - Door Lock button issues Sign In

I had a new serpentine belt and tensioner installed today in my 92 Dodge Dynasty. After picking up the car and going to my destination, my door lock button would not lock my doors. It would unlock them. Later I popped my faceplate of my CD player in and the radio won't power up. I immediately headed back to the repair shop but as I was sitting in their parking lot I decided to try the door lock button. Bingo it locked and unlocked the doors everytime. So I figured I would not worry about the radio until tomorrow. After getting home, I shut off the car opened the drivers door and tried to lock the doors with the button. Nothing. Close the door. Still unlocks, but will not lock. Put the key in and turn on. Lock button works. Open the door, will not lock even with the key in. Door lock button works only with the key on and the door closed. Passenger side works the same way so it is not an individual button issue.

I am taking it back to the repair shop tomorrow, but anyone have any ideas as to what has happened. Never had any electrical issues before today.

After taking it back to the garage and they claim they spent 6 hours checking but still unable to find the problem, they said that it was just coincidence. It was nothing they did. Well, last weekend my son (not a mechanic) came to change out the stereo. Replacement did not work either. So started checking fuses. All of them. Found a blown fuse which was labeled for the horn, but horn still worked. Replaced fuse. Door locks work normally again and so does the stereo.

Strange, but that was the problem. Maybe this will save someone else some unnecessary aggrivation in the future.

Hey Rick,

Thanks for sharing this issue and what was found. Shows the importance of checking fuses and I'll suggest doing so by test light as proof of power getting in and thru them.

This smacks of something aftermarket wired such that somehow horn power was tapped by for some reason and thru another device had some trickle power available.

In that it started with the belt tensioner I still would look there for nearby wiring that could short - now on that "horn" labeled fuse. Is that a factory label for a fuse location or an aftermarket label (sticker or something) there?

I wouldn't open up a can or worms in that all is well right now but I'd take a glance at what might have blown the fuse to begin with and have yet another spare handy.

Good luck,

T
