okay, i have had alot of problems with my crown victoria. first, the alternator went bad, so i took it to a mechanic, they changed the battery... so, after i had some additional belts changed, i put an alternator in myself. then the car worked fine. suddenly one random day, my car wouldn't crank. i got someone to jump off the car, and it drove about a mile, and shut off completely. i've tried jumping it off, and i'll leave the engine idle for over 20 minutes, then to test it i shut the car off and try to restart it only to get nothing. what could the problem be? the battery is new, the alternator is new, and the everything else seems to running fine on the vehicle. any assistance would be awesome....

This is the 5.0 isn't it? Check for voltage output after a good jump and the plug in connector may be burnt but are available if so. It could be a bad alt -- stuff happens, T

Sounds to me like Tom's right. Is that alternator new or remanufactured? Is the voltage regulator internal or external? If it's external, it can be replaced easily. If it's internal, you will need to change out the alternator. With the engine running, you should have 14.0-14.6 volts across the battery posts. If the battery, terminals, and charging test OK and the battery still keeps going dead while sitting, you may have something drawing the battery down.

For readers: Most (all that I've seen) regulators were inside the alternator in that vintage of Fords. Watch out for that plug it can short and wreck the new one. Also always best to charge a new battery or at least check as some are not fully charged when you get them and will over work the alternator and fry it, T

Also check the wiring down by the left front of the engine close to the power steering pump. I have seen many connections there break or corrode up so bad that current can not go through.
Being way2old is why I need help from younger minds
