91 Toyota Celica 2.2l 130k. Starts with a jump, not with fully charged battery Sign In

my car will start only with a jump start. I just changed the battery on the thing like a week ago. it all started when I was stopped at an intersection for a red light. As the light turned green, i put the car in gear and dropped the clutch, killing the engine. I turned the ignition and nothing happened. It was as if the battery is totally dead. no idicator lights, headlights nothing. though certain thing seemed to work, like the power locks and my cd deck would spit out cds.
I had a buddy jump start it for me and I got to my driveway. I shut the engine off and tried to restart it again. nothing.!!!! again it is as if the battery is totally dead.

this morning I had it jumped again. only to have it die again. I hooked the battery up to a trickle charger and charged it up and tried to start it again. I even checked the battery with a voltmeter. it read a little over 12 volts....

Seems the "U" bolt connectors are not making good contact with the posts even if they look good I'd bet they aren't. If you can twist them with pliers that's not good enough. Noticed at AutoZone and used to be a common thing that lead shim covers to make posts larger so U bolts grab better were available.

All connections must be good. Know that the jump is using the U bolt and not the posts themselves which would explain why it works with a jump and not on its own.

Starter motor takes a ton of amps and the other items very little except some headlights and some other high amp draw items which take too much for it to run with a lousy connection,

Thanks for the good report.

Couldn't find the pic of the shims I mentioned. Two types of top post cable ends for Toyota are lead and lead free which look like this.....

Lead free can be a problem with the whole end. Either way if they are clean and don't bottom out the two parts of where the bolt tightens them you may not need to pull tricks. The lead caps (like a pill box cap) were something I hadn't seen in a long time. The real hacks would drive a nail in the area to snug them - worked but not a good idea.

If you need new ends because they are too corroded they aren't all that expensive whole and harder to find high quality ends only but they do exist.

This is an example of a good ones........

This an example of what I call temporary ones...........

I would only use those till you could do better. Some as cheap as a buck! Get what you pay for.

Good luck,

T
