90 Hodna Civic Accessory(?) fades, pulses Sign In

My 1990 Honda Civic just started behaving badly. Have an iPod adapter plugged into the cig. lighter. I installed the radio two years ago. Now, at start of car, the door light on the dash glows ever so slightly. Oh, and the clock resets at every start. Only lights function when ignition is off - no cab lights, etc. Problem exacerbates when turning signal is used - both sides. When turn signal is used, clock will flash, and door light will flash. Problem is eased when radio faceplate is removed, and iPod adapter is removed, (the door light goes out). But, even with radio faceplate, etc. removed, using the turn signals makes the in dash clock and the door light pulse. Oh, and when the door light is glowing, it will pulse. When I try to turn the radio on, the face lights up and pulses with the clock and the door light.
Three weeks ago I had the belts replaced (keep in mind signs and symptoms only started suddenly tonight). Had the engine gaskets replaced as well as having the cv boot replaced at same time last week (may be totally unrelated, but that's the work that's been done on it lately).

Cool It's obviously because the car is RED! LOL!

From recent work I'll bet the ground strap or whatever is used between engine block and body is weak or broken completely,

I replaced the ground cable as it was a little worn, but problem still persists. My girlfriend informs me that she had used the cigarette lighter just prior to all this happening. All fuses are ok. Thinking maybe I could buy a new stereo and have them install it (correctly this time). Possibly that may fix the problem? Hey, if I can get a new stereo out of what is clearly my girlfriend's fault - (we'd had the discussion two years ago that she was not to use the cigarette lighter and I wanted it out of the car completely; she wouldn't have it as it was original to the car, so it stayed in the glove box) - I should go for it, no?

That's it! First the car is RED then you have a girlfriend actually use the cigaratte lighter!

The possible reason is still a ground. Using the cigarette lighter to heat up its element does use a blast of electricity and at worst should only blow a fuse but you didn't say that. Other things used in lighter/powerports probably will use less amps than the lighter itself. I think everything is still grounded from dash metal to body metal somewhere and that is weak. It shouldn't hurt to add a ground strap from known common ground of dash parts to known common ground of the body of the car. You could just test that with good jumper wire with alligator clips GROUND TO GROUND and see if things improve.

There's nothing wrong with original cigarette lighters except they don't work as well as power ports which look the same. Folks do take them out like you did and things fall in there like coins - just dirt and they screw up. It's best to either leave the lighter there as a plug or get a plastic plug to cover the thing when not in use.

Another problem with real cigarette lighters that if they have ever been used to light a cigarettle is they get dirty and corrode and then become a direct short!
