87 Mercury Marquis 5.0 good battery but no power anywhere (even breaklights, dome lights, no horn, flashers ect all out) car completely dark. Car ran fine but was cranking slowly at starting. After jumping vehicle several times and riding to charge system, car still required jump. CAR HAS NEW ALTERNATOR. I noticed battery cable worn so I disconnected battery and cut back worn rusted cable. I also tried to disconnect cables from starter relay solenoid to clean connections but could not break rusted connection without busting plastic solenoid relay. Solenoid relay has small crack in plastic. When I reconnected the battery which checked out OK, I got NO POWER ANYWHERE IN THE VEHICLE even interior lights, headlights, breaklights are DARK, nothing, ZERO. With battery cables all hooked up, I tried to hotwire by jumping terminals on starter relay and got NO POWER OR SPARK. I checked the listing of fuses, but could find any listed that would cause complete loss of power to TO EVERYTHING IN THE CAR. Any ideas appreciated.

Ok: If you cut back that pos cable why not just get a new one? It's just a short pigtail to solonoid and the temp end jobs cause troubles and could be most of this trouble. Replace the solonoid but it's not all just that if still without power. Look right at the terminal where the bat + cable goes and other items that are also attached there. There could be a fuse link, relay and more. Just test light those to see power getting thru and replace as needed. Note: Plug on alternator is an historic problem on the common alternator on these. Make sure that and wiring is ok. Self soldering, color coded replacements are available is that's messed up, T

Replaced positive battery cable and starter relay solonoid. Battery was very low, so added water and charged. Cleaned the connections on the post that powers the accessories (it was a challenge to neatly arrange so many leads on one post [no room]). That did the trick! Vehicle up and running. Thank you Tom Greenleaf!

Thanks for posting the fix. It will help others for an eternity. Now that you've cleaned up those connections make a habit of looking at them on any car for that matter and what I do is just spray some WD-40 or similar on them which really slows down the crud that makes them lose contact and the trouble you had which isn't that uncommon!
