I've been driving a while now with a faulty ignition. Every time I start the car I need to turn the key anti clockwise a little so the car keeps idle. I've been driving like this for close to a year. I blew two coil packs and the car has a misfire. And when I put foot down on the accelerator pedal the car switches of. I even changed the fuel pump, and I checked. The spark plugs are all fine. The lead wires are fine as well. Could a faulty ignition harness be the cause?

What happened to the coils? What part of them failed?

Coils can fail prematurely from:

(1) Excessive resistance in the secondary side of the system causing the coil to operate at max load. This can cause the spark to burn through the coil housing looking for an easier way to get to ground.

(2) Excessive dwell time. Dwell is the amount of time the coil primary is being turned on by the ignitor/ECU. When the primary is on too long the coil windings overheat.

If you have a problem with the ignition switch, you should correct that first. Verify your secondary ignition components are within specs. That includes plug gaps, ignition cable resistance, etc. You may need to take it to a shop that has an ignition scope to see if the primary is on too long or if there are other problems in the ignition system.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
