Because of recurring troubles with original windshield washer system, want to bypass washer pump and put in a TRICO universal pump.
The original pump is located on the firewall, I think it basically just plugs in to connections on the firewall. Not sure, but the TRICO pump probably
can be mounted anywhere, but Ill probably mount it near the water reservoir which is nearer the grill.

How difficult is it to hook up the TRICO pump on this model of Buick so it works with the original controls underneath the steering wheel?

I haven't installed any of these but if you get a wiring diagram for that circuit and find the power & ground wires for the washer pump & use those as your power & grounds it would seem the pump should work with the factory controls.

As Sidom said, there are only 2 wires at the washer pump. The black wire is ground and the other wire (pink)? is feed. Hook these up to the new pump and you should be all set. If you must cut the factory pigtail off the washer pump, cut wires at least 3" back from pigtail. This way if you ever want the factory pump working again, you can still solder the wires on the pigtail rather than have to buy another one. These pigtails are getting outrageously expensive.
