I have a 1983 K5 Blazer with a 6.2 engine . I have over 200.00 miles on here . I had a problem with charging and found the connector gone off the wire coming off the alternator that goes to the battery . I replaced it and still no charge . When I went to remove the alternator it was really hot !!!! The parts store gave me a new alternator . I installed that one and it was charging but was so hot it burned my finger . Now the belt squeals . Is this normal to have this much heat ?

An alternator working too hard to charge a low battery or fight with a fault will get too hot to touch and can destroy a new one. Battery really should be charged separately and it would run warm not hot unless you were using lots of high amp draw assessories,

I didn't have anything on when I ran it after the install of the alternator. The batteries may have been down ? What should I check next ? Any ideas ?

I also show 15.4 volts coming to the batteries

15.4 would be the upper extreme for output voltage showing a charge anyway. It should really settle down to less than 15v with a good battery charged up.

I continue to harp on charging batteries before making conclusions and testing as it's simply the life of the show. No joke - WallyWorld and others have the simpliest chargers, slow ones but still fine that will trickle charge a battery up nicely and shut down themselves showing a "green" light when done. Those are under $20 bucks - slow as said like perhaps all day or more if you have the time. Faster ones cost a bit more but don't usually have the automatic "float" system which shuts down the thing completely when done AND will come back on as needed which is handy for a maintainer situation like a car or any machine using a 12v battery that isn't used seasonally or that often.

When a battery is low but not flat the vehicle's alternator will charge it's full amp output rating which is a lot of power! That makes alts get warm up to too hot to touch and isn't the best for the alternator or the battery to go so fast. That heat and speed can damage either even when newer. Most regular automotive batteries are not meant to sustain being drawn down very low and repeated drains to low or flat seriously compremises the reserve of that battery.

**********

I believe this regulator is internal as most GM alts use and non adjustable. The output volts of 15.4 is on the line of concerning me especially if it stays there when running - ideas anyone else?

Hello I just came in to tell you all what's happening . I put a charger on the battery furthest from the system ( I have 2 batteries for the diesel engine ) The charger showed they were both charged but the needle was bouncing around . I then took it off that battery and put it on the battery that was closest to the starter and alternator and it showed it was heavily discharged . My battery terminal wire from the alternator goes to this battery . Either I need to move my wire to furthest one away or is that battery maybe bad ? thanks

Ok - It's making more sense now. Dual batteries create their own issues. You may know that if both are connected for the extra amps and still 12v system which it is then both batteries need to be in the same condition or it makes issues. In fact when dual bats are not separated one bad one can hurt the good one.

The trick is to check each one on it's own for its own merits and replace together if needed - arrgh! $$

Laugh or cry - Spent a decade doing some serious Yachting with mazes of wires and batteries - up to eight! Then make sure all are charged but that one bad one can't ruin the show with bat isolators and in those they ran refrigerators, ice makers lights and so on and if you screwed up engines didn't start which wasn't funny at all!

I can see why your alt is working so hard with two and possibly on bad one. Just take each for its own for testing and it should all work out,
