Hey my first time here.
Sorry to have to hijack but, I can't seem to post anywhere so hope you excuse m.
I have a 72 Mercury Cougar XR7, 351 Cleveland, 3 speed automatic console shifter.
I know all about the neutral safety switch and it's functions. My issue is, The car starts just fine in park and in neutral, but when I put it in Reverse, the backup lights do not work.
I have tested the switch with my 12V tester with the key in the on position and in starting position and I do not get ANY power to the switch. I mean, when it is in park, neutral and in reverse. Now the shifter light works fine.
I can not figure this out if there is no power to the switch, how does the car start??????
Any one out there please give me an answer>
Also, does anyone know how to rebuild these switches? I have priced them and the are like from $100 up to $190.00

Hi and welcome. Understand frustration posting till you get the hang of it. Moved and renamed as it is now is a new thread.
No reverse lights and no power. Let the wire chase begin. Glass fuses? Check them with test light. Switch I'd check for continuity.
Old phart here. Folks used to mess with "reverse" or "back up" lights such that they stayed on - why? It meant you wanted to race at least locally?
351C! 1972! That was a race car out of the factory and would blow the doors off most cars out there.

Thanks for reply. Checked the fuse and it is good and even replaced it.
How does it start if the switch is no good?

I need your help as info is spotty that I could find. There's more about Mustangs which should be VERY similar.
My investigating now would be if the switch, and fuse has power to it? Should be a an 1156 bulb out back and would bet same wire color as at the switch which should look like this and listed as available still?

If a dedicated fuse with power it then power should be at the switch.
Sockets wont light bulbs if not grounded so that needs to be checked if all else checks out,

Am I missing something here? What does a brake light switch have to do with backup lights?

That is messed up? The pic of the switch should be right and other stuff wrong? Note 4 wires to that switch which could and stated did both neutral safety AND back up lights.
I'll see if I can clean up that post as it's just not right as is.........

How is a brake light switch going to turn on the back up lights?

Neutral/Park safety switch NOT brake lights is in same unit with back-up lights apparently on those years of console shifted Fords.
Gotta let this machine cool off for a while
