Last night I decided to swap out the factory stereo in my Hyundai with a Sony WX-GT90BT. I disconnected the negative terminal of the battery and inserted the key to ensure no power was running through the vehicle. After taking the key out I was able to strip the usual parts of the dash to unscrew the factory stereo. I cut all the wires from the 24-pin harness and stripped and soldered (while also taping over with electrical tape) the corresponding wires together. The only wires needed from the stereo were:

Ground - (which I grounded to a metal piece behind where the stereo rests. I can post pictures later, I'm currently away from home)
Battery +
Illumination +
ACC +
All eight wires corresponding to the positive and negative terminals for all four speakers

All other wires from the stereo wiring harness and the vehicle's 24-pin harness were left unstripped and disconnected. After plugging in the new harness to the stereo as well as the antenna cable and wired microphone, I reconnected the negative terminal of the battery and turned my car on. The radio worked! (aside from the rear right speaker which I was going to go back in and fix the following day). I had the radio on for about 30 minutes with the engine off before starting up the engine. I had the car in the garage the whole time during installation, but I have to park on the street to let my parents use the two-car garage.

Everything worked fine until this morning. My car wouldn't turn over. I inserted the key and turned it all the way (and held it), but I only heard revving once until it stopped trying. My instant thought was the battery. To my knowledge, nothing was left on overnight, and it may have been a combination of both extreme cold and icing (it's about 14 Fahrenheit here) along with some mistake in my wiring. I didn't have time to check any fuses, and to my knowledge, there were no extraneous or out of the ordinary indications on my dash; I had to leave for work and my friend gave me a ride. The dash lit up and my stereo turned on. I didn't try the windows or any other electronic components like lights, but my remote worked, though my horn sounded weaker than usual. Could the cold have an effect on the battery not having enough power to start the radio AND engine? It doesn't make sense, because I was able to start the car up fine the previous night.

I have a 2007 Hyundai Sonata GLS with (I believe) a 2.4 L engine. More specs on the car can be found here: link deleted ................... not allowed

Any help is greatly appreciated!

My first thought is ok my second thoughts are

Is the ck eng light or (if applicable) the security light staying on?

You did say the engine cranked? even if briefly then I would work this as a dead battery.

Bad, bad move............. There are data lines in that harness that will cause you all kinds of problems.

They make adapter harnesses to do that. Hacking up the harness is a big mistake.

I don't see any data lines in that harness:

Just an assumption..................

It still shouldn't have been hacked up.

I agree...hacking usually leads to problems.

He should go ahead and have the battery recharged and tested. Also make sure the battery cable connections are clean and tight. When it is running again check the charging system voltage and then do a parasitic draw test. Got a feeling it does have something to do with the installation.

Re: 2007 Hyundai Sonata won't start after stereo replacement Sign In

As far as my skill level goes with vehicles, this is my first trial at a "do-it-yourself" sort of rig. I wanted to try to save some cash by wiring it up myself. I followed a few tutorials and compared wiring schematics from the new and old stereos and matched them up accordingly. As far as the wiring job, everything seems to work just fine aside from the rear right speaker which I'm planning on fixing. Steering wheel controls no longer work (and I knew they wouldn't) because there was no way to wire them up to the new stereo's harness. I figured since the wiring for the Sonata didn't look too difficult that I'd be able to pull it off myself by soldering. I had no idea an adapter could be purchased for this kind of setup, but unfortunately it's a bit late now, hah. I can always go back and resolder any loose wiring. If all else fails, I'll try taking it into a shop.

Now as far as my battery is concerned, I was able to jump my car successfully and I parked it in the garage. I hooked up a trickle charger to the battery and will leave it charging for a few hours. Will charging my battery prevent it from dying out like it did overnight, or is there something else I'll need to do? I still have no idea why the battery was dead in the morning; I've never had problems starting my car before, even in extreme cold.

No, charging the battery won't prevent that. I'm sure it has something to do with your wiring job. Something is powered without the key that shouldn't be.

Re: 2007 Hyundai Sonata won't start after stereo replacement Sign In

I unhooked the battery and cleaned the terminals so I could get some pictures of the wiring job behind the stereo.

Wiring:

Ground cable. It's grounded to that silver thing that I circled. Not sure what it is, but I don't think it's causing a problem.

Wiring close up:

Here's my charger. Before I unplugged it to clean the terminals and take the pictures, it was hovering around the 4 I circled. When I reconnected the charger after I was finished (I didn't plug the stereo back in), it was where the indicator is pointing now. Is that normal? I don't think I should've lost that much power.

My parents also told me that during my last vehicle inspection at the dealer, they told me that my battery was pretty weak. I never had problems with it up until this installation. Maybe it's time to get a new battery?

Re: 2007 Hyundai Sonata won't start after stereo replacement Sign In

This very likely could be the fact that the battery was weak to start with. You mentioned that you had the new radio playing for some time without the engine running.
This would have lowered the battery voltage somewhat. Now if you just started the the car and parked it outside; the charging system didn't have enough time to recharge this already weak battery. You go out to it the next COLD morning and the battery just didn't have the power to crank the engine.
I would not only charger the battery as you have done; but take it in and have it tested. While the car is there have them do a complete test as in charging system output, starter draw and parasitic draw.

Re: 2007 Hyundai Sonata won't start after stereo replacement Sign In

@Dan
That seems like a likely scenario. I'm getting a new battery today and I'll see if it'll cause any problems with the stereo installed. If I'm unable to start it with the new battery, I'll assume there's some sort of parasitic draw, in which case I'll get it tested. But with a new battery, I'm hoping that my car will be able to start with the stereo while sitting outside.

Re: 2007 Hyundai Sonata won't start after stereo replacement Sign In

Yep, I was right. It had to be a combination of a weak battery and freezing temperatures that wouldn't allow my car to start. Left it on the street overnight with temperatures around 14 F after I rewired the remaining speaker and reattached everything. Just went outside this morning and it was able to start up just fine with the new battery.

Thanks for everyone's help! =)

Glad it's set for now. You know an automotive battery does NOT have the same AMPS when colder, incrementally less as it get colder.

Wiring hackery is still to be avoided like the plague. Hope it stays all set now,

T
