2006 Scion XA Code P0335 Engine Stall Help
|
|
|
Hello all, I'm running into an intermittent engine stall when changing from park-drive-reverse-neutral on my 06 scion xa with the 1.5L 1nz-fe. Engine does not stall when at speed, idle isn't terribly rough, about 750rpm in Park, ~650rpm in R/N/D. It'll drop rpms occasionally down to maybe ~550rpm and get a little rough but this is pretty slight. No engine misfires recorded. Check Engine Code P0355 "Engine Control Circuit Crankshaft Position (CKP) Sensor - sensor circuit malfunction". Actions Taken: Replaced CKP Checked resistance of old and new CKP per shop manual page ES-186 (985-1600ohm acceptable range). Both were within range. Issue persists on new sensor. Checked resistance/ continuity/ shorts from + and - terminals of CKP wire harness to ECM Connector on the ECU. 0ohm resistance in the circuit, good continuity, and no shorts to ground detected on any of the 4 pins (per shop manual page ES-186). No visible damage to any of the wiring harnesses/ connectors. Battery is <6mo old, starts strong, no corrosion on terminals, 12v when off, 13.6v when running, doesn't seem to be a battery issue. There was some oil on the old sensor, not sure if that's normal or not. It didn't seem damaged.
Does anyone have any next steps? Would love to avoid paying an expensive diagnostic fee to a shop if I can help it. Thanks all!

You are intermittantly losing the Crank signal for a moment. Since this happens when shifting it could mean that the movement of the engine triggers something, maybe a damaged wire somewhere that reacts when the harness is jerked. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Any way to troubleshoot that without ripping the whole wiring harness out? The limited bit of the wiring harness I could see was neatly and securely tucked away in its cable clips and the ECU-CKP Wiring harness circuit has essentially 0 resistance when probed with a multimeter and no ground shorts I could detect. Obviously that was done with the car off.

Not likely with the equipment you have available. You can try moving wires around with the engine running to see if you can trigger anything ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Tried moving the wires I could reach while the engine was running. No stall.

That's pretty much all you can try yourself. You're going to need an auto electric specialty shop to find this.

Looks like the issue was a shorted cruise control module of all things.

That's a good example of how intricate these problems can be. Nobody would have ever suspected that relationship. Glad you found the problem anyway. I'll close this now as solved.
