2004 Toyota Echo faulty alternator installation? Sign In

Hi guys. Would love some advice. I have a 2004 Toyota Echo with about 140,000 kms on it.

My alternator slowly started to die over the last little while. It seems it would charge the battery less and less when I drove around. I bought a new battery. Drove for about another month, until to the point where it was hardly charging at all (I'd drive for say 30 minutes, and then there would be just enough juice to barely start the car.)

In hopes of saving money :) , I bought an alternator from a well-known Vancouver BC parts store. Then I hired a mobile mechanic from craigslist to come install the alternator.

He came and swapped the alternators for me. But now, the battery light is on when I drive. The battery does not seem to be charging at all. My car ran out of power. I thought it might have been that the battery was killed from the abuse it received, and it was under warranty anyways, so I replaced the battery. The battery light still remains on, and even though I drove around for 30-40 minutes yesterday, it doesn't seem to be charging. I'm guessing that the alternator was not installed correctly. But I'd love any advice. Is there something else that could be broken that is preventing the battery from being charged? Thanks for any assistance.

I tried to save money by not going to a shop but it looks like this might end up costing more in the long run :(

From what I remember there is only one bolt on and one plug in electrical connection(s); if the belt is tight then the physical install was done properly?
What needs to be done is check for power feeds to & from the alternator; making sure what and who’s suppose to be there are.
I suggest taking the vehicle in and have it diagnosed; it could very well be a defective alternator. Just because it looks shinny from the reconditioning doesn’t mean it was a good build.

Q- Was your abttery light on previous to the alternator being replaced?

There could be a few factors here. 1stly, pop your hood, and have a look at thye actual alternator. there is a pulley on the front. Is the drive belt securely fastened to that pulley? Turn car on a have a look to see if the pulley is spinning with the belt.

Other areas could be, faulty ALT, Pully incorrect for drive belt, ALT bolt not wired properly. Just check all that. but I would take it to a mechanic to get them to have a look for you.

Thanks for the replies guys.

DrElectrics: no -- before I had the alternator placed, the battery light was not on.

I'll check the pulley out, thanks.
