2004 5.7L hemi etc light, misfires, and stalls when wet/damp (rain) Sign In

2004 Dodge Durango Hemi Misfires and Throttle control electric bolt light comes on and goes into limp mode when wet/damp.

When the engine becomes wet/damp, it will start to shake like crazy (misfire?) and you can hear it dieing and the rpm drops and has a hard time starting up once turned off, this also happens when its not even wet like in the parking lot at work it will misfire randomly. The Electrical light on the dash also appears randomly and flashes when driving down the road (EVEN if its not wet outside) and the car will shake even more, can only reach a top speed of 60MPH, and when in drive it goes about twice the speed it is suppose to when my foot is off the break and gas (limp mode?). If it gets extremely wet (rain) or damp the car will sometimes completely stall. The ETC light will turn off when I restart the car, but the car will sometimes have trouble starting.

I've replaced sparkplugs, wires, and sprayed them all in silicon didn't help. Today I took a hose and put it on the above the center of engine block and sprayed mostly around the spark plugs and wires and it started to die and went to around 400-500 rpm from 800 and sounded like it was struggling a lot. Could the problem possibly be the throttle control getting wet? is that possible? Because when the lighting bolt icon pops up, the throttle is very hesitant and pushy at times and only goes a maximum of 60 MPH and when in drive idling the car goes twice as fast as usual.

Have had this problem for 2 years now, can't figure it out.

You've put up with this for 2 years so there's probably more damage than the original cause. Easy with hose watering an engine, especially if warm. Code readings would near certainly help and expect several to go thru but probably just one or two (write all #s down) are causing others.

If this plain behaves most of the time and notably just the wet damp situation brings it on like hosing down the engine which you should hope didn't wreck anything fine but would be better to just spray bottle a mist just one spot at a time, wait if nothing and move on. If you can target one connection or area or wiring perhaps it just might show visual damage. If so the fix would then depend on just what and where.

Get the codes read now anyway. If running that poorly for any reason it's stressing things out that could be nasty expensive,

Okay I just did it, P2173 Throttle Actuator Ctrl Sys-Hi Airflow Detected

Today I just got in my car and i was reversing down my driveway and i was fiddling with the radio, so i was braking* a little bit (tapping the braking* slowly, where i could feel the engine trying to push like repetitive small pushes but the brake was giving resistance) and I could feel it misfiring and then the ETC light started to flash, RPM rose, and the engine was misfiring like crazy and it went into limp mode. Was COMPLETELY dry, only a bit cold this morning (Michigan), so there could of been some moisture in the engine from this morning, because after i got back from driving to the store about 20 minutes later and tried it again in my drive way it was fine. This happens when i leave work when my car has been sitting in the cold for sometime, moisture might build up after it sits in the parking lot at work. I thought it might be the manifest ring being cracks or the throttle body.

-It goes away after i restart, Its almost like when i first start my car up cold, it will misfire like one piston and i can feel it, and if i brake then more will misfire putting it into limp mode and the ETC light flashes

The moisture thing may be confusing this. Any unmetered air intake thru throttle body is going to chain react to adjust to bad information. I'd plain look for all integrity of everything taking in air, clean throttle body anyway and check for vacuum leaks. Not so sure how intake manifold is done on this but that could be a source of vacuum leaking unmetered too, gasketing or even a crack.

Right now not sure why it felt like it was picking on one piston for a while?

I found this: (link deleted)
Might be the PCV valve or the Throttle body itself.

Can't allow links to another forum. If you like that one just stay there but I suggest you actually get off the 'puter and go look and see what you can find in that circuit that might be obvious,

Have you considered taking it to a professional with the right equipment and experience to deal with this problem?

SYMPTOM
P2173-HIGH AIR FLOW VACUUM LEAK DETECTED (SLOW ACCUMULATION)

WHEN MONITORED
Ignition on and engine running with no MAP Sensor DTCs.

SET CONDITION
A large vacuum leak has been detected or both of the TP Sensors have failed based on their position being 2.5 volts and the calculated MAP value is less than the Gas Flow Adaptation value is too high. One trip fault the code will set within 5 seconds. ETC light will flash.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
- VACUUM LEAK
- RESISTANCE IN THE (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT
- (F856) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
- RESISTANCE IN THE (K1) MAP SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- (K1) MAP SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
- RESISTANCE IN (K900) SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT
- RESISTANCE IN THE (F855) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT
- (F855) 5-VOLT SUPPLY CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
- RESISTANCE IN THE TP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT
- TP SENSOR SIGNAL CIRCUIT SHORTED TO GROUND
- RESISTANCE IN THE (K922) TP SENSOR RETURN CIRCUIT
- MAP SENSOR
- TP SENSOR
- PCM

Yes three times in the past, and they told me that there is no problem with my car. I never had the P code until now, so i have some ideas on what i can try and do to it tomorrow and if that doesn't help i will take it in.

It may not be a vacuum leak problem since moisture causes the problem to appear. Maybe the throttle body electrical connector or MAP sensor connector is getting water intrusion. It states that if both TPS sensors in the throttle body go low, that code can appear and cause the ETC light to flash. Make sure the connectors have their seals installed and don't have moisture inside.
