2003 Mercury Grand Maquis - Voltage output drop

On two occassions about a month apart, my voltage light went on and the meter dropped to the typical battery output level. After turning off car and restarting, it came back up to normal voltage level. In between these two occassions I do notice a slight slowness in the voltage needle reaching the normal level. Could this be brushes, or regulator? Thanks.

I'll bet it's brushes as the diodes would normally stay broken. If you feel ok with taking the alternator apart you can use mega fine sandpaper (croakus cloth) and shine up the surfaces but don't go nuts as these parts don't give you tons of extra for working with, T

Thanks. I've replaced brushes many years back but with the built in regulator and all I'm not even sure where they are. Would they be just below the 3-wire connector? Is purchasing new brushes an option? Thanks again for your thoughts.

Nowadays there are electrical shops that do that. It is easier and cheaper to buy a remanufactured alternator. Steve

Steve said it probabably is the most efficient way is to buy rebuilt. A good rebuilder will have checked out their parts before they send them out for sale. The places that rebuild them are mostly good. Even if you have the time it really is a toss up, T
