2003 Intrepid - AC, Speedometer, Odometer all Died While Driving Sign In

Thanks in advance for any help.

I bought this Intrepid (2.7L) used from an individual. It ran fine for about 2 weeks.

Then I was driving and everything was normal until I noticed that the AC started blowing warm (outside temperature.) I looked down and saw:

1. AC blowing warm.
2. The temperature gauge had gone flat
3. The speedometer needle had gone flat.
4. The odometer had stopped (it lights up but always shows the same mileage.)
5. All gear lights (P R N D, etc.) were lit.
6. The engine light lit.
7. The airbag light lit.

The fuel gauge works fine. The car drives and shifts fine with no roughness. Idle speed is good. It literally feels like a new car.

I took it to a Dodge dealer, who told me that the engine wiring harness and PCM had to be replaced, and possibly the Airbag and BCM. He said that the car had been involved in an accident (not according to CarFax) and it may have been jumped backward. The guy quoted me around $6500 minimum. I declined the service and left devastated.

I have driven it this way for a year and a half, as I have to use it to get to work and I have had no time to fix it.

Once, 3 months after the problems started, everything started working normally for a few days. To the best of my recollection (I could be remembering wrong,) I started the car while turning the windshield wipers on (not on purpose) and suddenly the AC worked, the gauges all worked, everything was perfect. I drove for a few days like this, then I was driving and had the exact same experience as before: the AC started blowing warm, the gauges went flat, etc.

I'm afraid to start messing with computer modules and connectors, lest I destroy something that was just misbehaving.

I really can't afford thousands of dollars right now.

If the Dodge dealer has diagnosed it and says thats what you need, i think he may be right. All i can do is give you a few things to check on. Try checking the fuses to the things going haywire, also, if you can gain access to your wiring harness, have a look and see if all wires look ok, it could also be a short somewhere. Good luck!

Re: 2003 Intrepid - AC, Speedometer, Odometer all Died While Driving Sign In

Thanks DrElectrics.

The reason I think the Dodge dealer mechanic was wrong was that everything started to work normally for a while, months after the diagnosis. If all those things were bad, I don't think everything would have suddenly started to work for a while.

It seems that there is indeed one loose connection or short, but I just don't know where to look. I've never been a car guy, but I want to learn. I don't know what wires to look at or where. Unfortunately, I have to run back and forth to Laughlin from Phoenix pretty often, so I can't get online for days at a time.

Thanks again,

Imagine

AH Phoenix AZ, lived there for a while in Surprise, West Valley. Good place. The next step you need to take is an ezy one. if you can see a loose wire, get someone with a multi metre to run a continuity test on it. Also, see if you cant get a wiring harness diagram from Dodge. it should let you know which wire is faulty.

I have a Haynes Repair Manual, which has many wiring diagrams. I've been looking through them, and "Instrument Cluster" appears on a couple. I have to leave town tomorrow morning, but I'll be seeing if I can figure it out right when I get back.

Thanks a lot, Dr.
