2003 Chev Monte Carlo SS Volt Indicator Guage	Sign In

2003 Monte Carlo, new battery...new altenator. Battery gauge drops to zero while driving. AC stops blowing cold but fan still runs. At times will lock radio control as well. Red alert light comes on with word SECURITY on dash. Cars engine is not effected and continues to run and starts up with no problem. Have not been able to find mechanic to help me. I was told possible short is cause but could take hours to locate. Please help...it's my only transportation and gets very uncomfortable during summer months. Problem usually occurs during very hot days.

First thing that should be done, but can only be done by someone with a enhanced scan tool is to do a full system scan of all the computer modules in the vehicle. Some scan tools can monitor the health status and see which modules are online. Watching the modules' on line status while the problem is occurring, could tell you if a particular module is going offline.

There could be modules storing trouble codes that may aid in figuring out what is actually happening. If certain modules lose power and go offline other modules that are alive and expecting information from those offline modules don't get what they need and will set communication codes.

Guess you have to start somewhere and that is where I would start if your vehicle came into our shop.
