I have a major problem. My battery was running flat VERY quickly. We realised tonight that this was because some people that we had loaned the car to had put a replacement battery in but had hooked up the stereo amplifier power cables incorrectly, draining the battery.

We jump started the car and left it running, meanwhile, a friend tried to disconnect the amplifier so that it wouldn't continue to drain. It arched with the amplifier red cable still connected, and the black cable touching the black terminal, and stopped the car.

We now cannot start the car. Does anyone have any idea of what the problem might be? Did we fry the computer or anything like that... is it just a fuse, or would the engine have continued running. We need this car as our first child is due in 9 days, and we can't yet afford to pay for some over priced mechanic to look for the issue, especially if it is a simple thing to fix.

Any help would be most appreciated. We have had a quick look at the fuses and not seen any obviously blown ones, but still, I don't have a voltmeter or anything to check them properly.

The car is a 2002 Lancer Coupe (australian release)

probably would have the test equipment & knowledge?
I do and no body gave them to me & someone has to pay for them and my experience.
Sorry but all within a couple of paragraphs, you’ve asked Mechanic’s for help, told us your sad story and insulted us.
That’s all I have to say, other then walking isn’t crowed!

My apologies to any mechanics who took offence, but the comment is aimed at "overpriced" mechanics, and was more of a dig at my lousy one horse town than anything else, and a burst of frustration over what "friends" do to your things when they borrow them. To the person that did respond, thanks for your help, but the insult can only be an insult if your ARE an "overpriced mechanic", as opposed to a decent hard working mechanic with fair prices and offers assistance to those he can.

Take it from my view point here. I am a graphic designer and I have posted many tutorials on photoshop and illustrator all over the web, but I don't leave smart arse comments on graphics forums about how much experience I have and how much time I've spent learning my trade. If someone asked "how do you get a metal look text using photoshop, because I don't want the money to pay an overpriced graphic designer to do it for me", I would give them help. If they then didn't have the know how to complete the task to their required level themselves, then I would send them to a graphic designer to have it done. BUT at the very least I would give them all of the assistance that they require at the onset, and would understand their frustration if things weren't exactly going their way to begin with.

As it turns out, I've been informed that this is more than likely a blown computer, but this was ONE opinion. If anyone has any other ideas, then by all means please let me know.
