2002 Grand Am ignition accessory wire Sign In

Looking for ignition switch accessory wire for my stereo. New (cheap) voltage detector (non-contact) shows all wires on switched side as hot when key not turned on (and cigarette lighter not hot when ignition is turned on). Detector seems to work on other devices (electric outlet, AAA battery, etc.). Is voltage detector the problem or am I not doing something right?

You really don't want to be messing with the wiring on that car. You have no idea how much damage you can do to the numerous computers in those circuits. You can't imagine how many cars have been fried by people installing stereos.

Voltage detector? Do you mean volt meter?

Have you checked the cigar lighter fuse?

They do make adapter harnesses, so you don't have to slice and dice the radio harness.

Non-contact volt meter/detector w/light, beep.

Do I really need an Accessory switched power source? I don't need the audio on in the Accessory position and I don't care about chimes. I just want audio on when car is running.

The factory radio only needed one power source and that is from the battery. Your aftermarket radio needs one battery source and one power source when the ignition is in the accessory/on position.

Usually an aftermarket radio the red is battery power and the yellow comes from switched ignition.

If you have questions, you should contact technical support for your radio on how to properly install it.

DS already said I think. Get the plug the adapts that radio to the car's existing wires without messing anything up. If by chance that's not available or doesn't accommodate memory of any setting don't just go looking for wires or things to tap into or you could cause untold problems.

Customer support would be a great idea if you can contact them for info. For all I know it's not compatible with this car?

Thanks for your help. Metra makes a $70 interface for these GM models which accommodates car data, chimes, etc. I had the Alpine unit installed in a 98 Sunfire with a universal Alpine plug with no problems.
