2002 Ford Escape Cranks but Wont Start Sign In

Hi,
I had a windshield replaced in my 02 Escape and had a leak problem afterwards. The vehicle sat for several months and battery died. I charged battery successfully but now engine turns over but wont start. I cannot hear the fuel pump when I turn the key (I do hear one click which I presume is the relay). I also notice that while the car is cranking, the RPM gauge doesn't move at all. I've tested all fuses and all are good. I've swapped the fuel pump relay with the defroster relay. This doesn't appear to be an anti theft issue because the theft light goes off after 3 seconds (manual indicates this is correct). Also, the check engine light goes off after a couple of seconds of cranking (which I've read may rule out a defective crank sensor). It seems that if the issue were the fuel pump, the RPM gauge would move while cranking. I've read that if the crank sensor is bad, the fuel pump would still prime when the key is first turned.

Which engine? Have you checked to make sure you had no fuel pressure while cranking just to confirm a possible fuel pump issue? If you spray some starting fluid into the intake, will the engine run on it?

Mine is the XLT with 3.0 Litre V6. I haven't done any further checks so far. It is high mileage (240K). I will try the starter fluid tomorrow.

Thank you,

Fuel pressure during cranking should be 39-55psi. If you find you have no pressure and you feel the fuel pump relay clicking, one quick test you can try to see if you have a dead spot pump is to smack on the bottom of the tank while someone cranks the engine. If the engine starts up while you're smacking on the tank, fuel pump time. If not, power and ground checks at the pump should be made before condemning it.
