Year: 2002
Make: Cadillac
Model: DeVille
Engine Size: 4.6 V8
Miles: 178,000

I recently purchased a used Cadillac Deville. The car was in this condition when I bought it, so I don't know the events leading up to how it's acting. As for it's symptoms, there's many, but I think they are all related to one source. First off, the battery must be disconnected when not running because the car drains it when not in use. After connecting the battery, the car usually starts after turning the key in the ignition. Sometimes, I need to jump start it by touching a wire on the engine after popping the hood open. (A sort of hot wiring in dire need method) After the engine is running, the modules on the dash sometimes don't light up, which leaves me wondering what speed I'm going. Even when the dash does light up, all the check engine lights are engaged, ranging from "Please service engine soon" to "Check fluid levels". The car's screen doesn't move when I change from park to drive to reverse, so I get to guess what gear I'm in as well. The radio, A/C, and windows don't work. All these problems have lead me to believe it is either an electrical issue with a faulty wire or two OR it's the computer chip.
So far, I've checked all the fuses and they are fine. No defects there. I could really use some help/second opinions about where to check and what to do. I've thought about going to the Cadillac dealer for a diagnostic check, but at the moment, I've spent all my hard earned cash on the car. I'm equipped with Chilton and Haynes, but I should warn the audience that I'm pretty inept when it comes to cars besides the basics. With my current financial situation, I'm in a bind to learn, so over the next few weeks I'll be picking up books and exploring the engine hands on. We've all got to learn sometime, so now's as good a time as any. I appreciate any feedback!

Sincerely,

There is a procedure for finding a battery draw like that.

You will need a digital ammeter and a jumper wire with clips on the ends to do this.
First rig any door switches so you can have a door open without triggering the interior lights and unplug the hood light. Remove one battery cable and attach the meter in series between the battery cable and battery post. Take the jumper wire and also attach it the same way. Leave the jumper wire on for at least 10 minutes to one hour to expire all the automatic timers. Now remove the jumper wire and read the meter. Anything over 50ma is too much draw. The way you locate this is to start removing fuses one at a time until the meter drops to normal level. This will be the circuit with something staying on. Determine what components are part of that circuit and check them individually until the problem is isolated.
