2001 mini cooper - brake lights stuck on and reverse lights out

Bought a 2001 mini cooper a few weeks back.
Brake light is now permanently stuck on and reverse lights are out. Took it to a garage who advised me to buy a switch from the local bmw mini dealership (which I did) - the garage then fitted it but the problem is still there and they have no idea why... Id like to try and hold off taking it to a mini dealership due to their extortionate hourly labour rates - please help!
