2001 cavalier electrical dies

While driving the dash lights flicker and I hear relay chattering under the dash and the engine dies. After I pull over and put the the car in park I can turn off and restart the car. This does not always work. Sometimes I have to play with the ignition a few times to get it to start. I was wondering whether the problem was with the ignition switch itself or a relay somewhere or something I am not thinking of. Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated.
