2001 Toyt Rav4 Electrical issues Sign In

2001, Toyt, RAV4, 2.0L

i haven't driven my car in two months (dmv registration issues that was just resolved). i needed to jump start the car to get it started. the car runs, but as soon as the jumper is removed, the engine cuts. battery is pretty much drained/dead. the meters, gauge, rpm, etc is pretty much dead as well as they do not work when the engine is running.

fuses are fine. one was burnt out, but it was for a cigarette lighter.

i was able to drive the car (manual shift unlock) up a tow truck with my portable battery boost.

took it into a shop and they said the acid in the battery bubbled over and pretty much kill the electrical box? junction box? he didnt' specify what box, but said that it needs to be replaced for $300-400. I just want to know if this is correct and that i am not being overcharged.

labor cost is fine, but if there's a 100% increase in the parts, that's where i have issues because i could have towed it to a toyota dealer instead.

How are we going to know that is correct? We may be good, but we ain't that good.

Can you take pictures of the junction box or whatever it is that is ate up with acid and needs to be replaced? Obviously its going to need a battery to begin with.

Sounds like you not only have a bad battery but a problem with the charging system also. You need to replace the battery so it will stay running for a while and then drive it to a shop to have the charging system tested.

yeah that's part of the problem. it's already in the shop - i typically get off work at 5pm and the shop also closes at 5pm. with the subway, it takes me about an hour to travel. i'll see if i can visit the repair shop tomorrow for pictures.

the mechanic wouldn't clarify which part of the "electrical box" is damaged and needs to be replaced. i'm wondering which "electrical box" would be worth that much. individual components i've searched for were each under $100 or much much less.

Probably wouldn't hurt to ask the mechanic to show you the box in question. Have him/her explain what is going on. If the box has the fuses for the alternator in it and its all eaten out, that could take the alternator offline.

It can easily cost that much to replace a fuse box. The parts are the small portion. it can take hours to assemble since every socket is a separate wire that has to be unlocked from the old box, possibly repaired and locked into the new box while it's all tightly attached to a harness.

no, the $300-400 is for the parts. the labor cost will ring it up between $800-900. again, i'm more concern about paying an additional 100-200% premium for parts. i will try to take some pictures tomorrow morning.

i appreciate all the responses guys. thanks.

Are you comparing Toyota OEM parts against Toyota OEM parts?
