2001 Grand AM GT won't start...strange pulsing sound? Sign In

First off my battery is only a year and a half old. My car has died on me a couple times within the last month. I'd be driving through the middle of an intersection and all of a sudden its dead. I've always been able to re-start it until today. This morning I tried starting it and it wouldn't turn over. The lights on the dash worked but it wouldnt turn over. It was, and still is, making a strange pulsing sound through the speakers. Anyway, it did finally start. I'm not sure why...just all of the sudden it started like nothing was ever wrong. Now tonight its the same deal....except it wont start for me...and its still making that pulsing sound! I assume its the starter or alternator.....but then again, I don't really know what I'm talking about...so I was hoping someone could pin point it or give me some advice. Thanks.

Seems like the common problem here lately is battery connections. Cables must be in clean/good shape at both ends. Battery can light up small dash lights with a poor connection but not start an engine and so on.

Engine quitting while driving may or may not be a separate issue - begin with making sure battery is charged and makeing good connection - testing alterntor ouput would be nice too,

I agree with Tom. The sound you are hearing is caused by low voltage. If the cables are not clean and tight, the alternator can not properly charge the battery. Out in left field, wonder if the ignition switch is properly adjusted. Juse wondering.
