I bought a 2001 Avalon with 70K miles and put on about 40K miles. When it's working, it drives perfectly. However, since buying the car I've had many electrical issues with it. First, the alarm would go off at random times, and no mechanic was able to figure out exactly what the problem was. One mechanic tried some sort of blind guess and it worked. Since then that has not been a problem.
About 6 months ago, the ABS and the VCS lights on the dashboard lit up. The next day, the engine and the headlights wouldn't turn on. Three days later, it started working without anyone knowing why.
About a week ago, the ABS and VCS lights went on again, but the car drove ok for the first day. Then, the next day, the ignition and headlights went on, but the car made a raspy noise as if the engine wasn't catching, and the car wouldn't drive. I got it towed to a Toyota mechanic who said it was maybe a problem with the EFI relay. He fiddled around with the wires, but he said he didn't think that he got to the root of the problem, even though the car started working. A few days later, the car totally wouldn't start and the headlights wouldn't go on. It turned on immediately with a boost, but died right when I turned off the engine.
Does this sound like a problem in the computer, wiring, etc? Is it fixable? Or do I have to buy a new car?

Definitely sounds like you got some gremlins there. Almost impossible to diag online....
Just make sure you got the basics covered, load check battery make sure the connections & grounds are clean & secure....

Remember the ad where the girl is getting gas and the gas jockey says "Where's the rest of your car toots?"
Hey - If this car starts with a boost everything about the battery new or not needs to be checked AND all connections. Test voltage of battery carefully at the posts while starting with its own and again at the clamps to see a difference. Know that if battery shows low voltage or is dead especially several time or if exposed to below freezing temp when dead - it can kill a new one!
