2000 ford focus altenator pls help

while driving my car my car idle'd real low then i felt a kick the it idle'd really high and sped up while all this was happening the lights where dimming and brightening up is this my altinator its a 2000 ford focus single head cam i could only run it for so long then would die out on me it would jump off fine but not stay on long
