2000 Pontiac Grand Prix SE
Engine Size (3.1 or 3.8)--can't remember off the top of my head-sorry!
Miles: ~217,000

A few days ago I was out and about running errands and when I got in my car, it wouldn't start (it had functioned just find until then). It clicked one time the first time I cranked, but made no sound during sucessive tries. Everything else electrical (headlights, radio, dashboard) worked without any problem. Fortunately, I was next door to an automechanic so I pushed the car over to them. They told me the starter had gone bad and needed to be replaced, which they did.

When I went to pick it up, they told me the battery was low and should be replaced as well. I opted to not have the battery replaced because I could either do that myself or take it to an autoparts store and have them do it for free.

My wife drove it once that night without any problem. The following morning I drove it once (for a few minutes) with no problems. However, when I tried to start it later in the morning, no luck. It was the exact same situation:The car clicked once the first time I cranked it, but nothing on any other time I tried to start it. Again, everything else electrical works just fine. I've tried to jump it, and had no luck with that either. I also tried to bypass the starter (with the help of a friend of mine who knows more than I do) with a screwdriver and that wasn't successful either.

Sounding a lot like a bad starter to me, assuming he jumped it correctly.

Thank you for the prompt response.

The starter was just replaced, and I'm having the same problems as I was beforehand. I wouldn't be completely shocked if the repair shop had done shoddy work, as I've not been terribly impressed with them.

However, if it is the starter, wouldn't I have been able to bypass it?

I guess that means the guy trying to jump the starter out didn't know what he was doing them. If the starter doesn't work when trigger power is applied directly to it, the starter is no good.

Unless there is some sort of resistance going on in the battery cables or connections.
