2000 Plymouth Voyager - no reading lights, aux power. AKA I'm stupid Sign In

I learned why the first step in replacing a radio in a car is "disconnect the negative battery cable."

I have a 2000 Plymouth voyager and when I was replacing the radio, I touch two wires that did not want to touch each other. There was a spark and the reading lights went off. The van is completely dead when it isn't running now. There are no door locks, no warning ding to let me know the keys are in the ignition with the door open, no reading lights and nothing else like the headlights will not come on. When I start the van, everything works normally (except the radio but that could be my wiring).

I have checked all of the fuses and they all test as working. What else could it be? Could I have missed a fuse? I know there are fuses under the hood too but I can't find a diagram for them.

Year of vehicle Van
Make of vehicle Plymouth
Model of vehicle Voyager
Engine size 3.3
Mileage/Kilometers 104000

Appears that you killed the BCM (body control module).

Check these fuses:

In the fuse block under the hood:

Fuse 15 10 amp

In the junction box underneath the dash on the driver's side:

Fuse 2 10 amp

You rock! Fuse 15 under the hood was blown. If anyone else finds this, that fuse is one of the front two in the fuse/relay block under the hood.

Unfortunately, I blew it again because I didn't wrap one of the wires well enough. Oh well, we have an awesome locally owned auto parts store in town so I can support the local economy by buying more fuses and wire caps in the morning.

Thanks again for your help! I really appreciate it.

Wire caps?

Don't use wire caps for automotive electrical installations or repairs. You'll just run into problems. The best method to use when joining two wires is to solder and heat shrink them. You can also use butt splices, but make sure they are the hermetically sealed kind.

Using wire nuts and twisting wires together and covering with black tape is bad. If you have ever seen a vehicle burn to the ground from an electrical fire, you'll understand where I am coming from.

Ok, I will take your advice. I will probably try the butt splices but if I did solder, do I just use normal rosin core solder or is there something special for cars? I am more of a computer guy than car guy but I am learning.

Thanks again for your help.

Wow, I sure hope you don't use twisted wires and wire nuts when repairing computers............LOL
